Staying Safe in the Summer Sun: Preventing Dehydration and Sunburn

Dr. Hemalatha.P, Consultant in Medicine, SUT Hospital, Pattom

As the temperature rises and the sun shines brighter, summer comes with potential health risks such as dehydration and sunburn.

Dehydration: The Risks and Signs

Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in, leading to an imbalance in electrolytes and vital nutrients. This can happen more frequently during summer due to increased sweating and higher temperatures. The risks of dehydration include Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke.

Prevention of Dehydration

To prevent dehydration during summer, follow these tips:

  • Stay Hydrated – Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Avoid Excessive Alcohol and Caffeine
  • Wear Lightweight and Breathable Clothing
  • Take regular breaks if engaging in outdoor activities.
  • Monitor Urine Color – A pale yellow color indicates proper hydration, while dark yellow or amber may signal
    dehydration.

Sunburn: Risks and Prevention

Sunburn occurs when the skin is exposed to excessive ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. It can lead to redness, pain, blistering, and long-term skin damage. The risks of sunburn include increased risk for Skin Cancer and Premature Aging.

Prevention from Sunburn

  • Use Sunscreen – Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher at least 15-30 minutes before going outdoors. Reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
  • Seek Shade – Limit direct sun exposure, especially during peak hours (10 am to 4 pm). Use umbrellas, hats, and sunglasses for added protection.
  • Wear Protective Clothing – Opt for lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats to cover exposed skin.
  • Stay Hydrated – Drinking water can help maintain skin hydration and reduce the risk of heat-related skin issues.

By taking proactive measures to prevent dehydration and sunburn, you can enjoy the summer season safely. Prioritizing your health and well-being during summer ensures that you can make the most of this vibrant and enjoyable time of the year.
