The Hidden Risks of Overprotective Parenting

Reshmi Mohan A, Child Therapist, SUT Hospital, Pattom.

Real protection lies in teaching children to manage risks independently rather than shielding them from every challenge. As the saying goes:

“Let your children learn and unlearn on their own, let them fall and stand up on their own.”

While overprotective parents aim to keep their children safe and happy, their excessive caution can hinder a child’s development.

Why Does Overprotection Happen?

  • Long-awaited child: After years of waiting, parents often become overly cautious.
  • Only child syndrome: Parents may feel the need to protect their only child excessively.
  • Single parenting: A single parent may overcompensate by being overly vigilant.
  • Grandparents raising children: In kinship care, the older generation may adopt a more protective approach.

Parents play a vital role as the first teachers of their children. Their guidance is crucial, but too much protection can lead to unintended consequences.

Effects of Overprotective Parenting

Children raised in overly controlled environments often face the following challenges:

  • Anxiety and a constant fear of failure.
  • Avoidant behaviour when facing new or challenging situations.
  • Extreme dependency on others for decision-making.
  • Difficulty asserting themselves.
  • Lack of confidence in social interactions with peers.
  • Increased risk of being bullied, as they struggle to stand up for themselves.

Such children often grow into adults who push beyond their limits due to a lack of self-regulation.

How to Break Free from Overprotective Parenting?

  • Take ownership of your decisions and life.
  • Set clear boundaries to assert independence.
  • Establish a personal routine that fosters autonomy.
  • Limit your availability to encourage personal space.
  • Encourage parents to find hobbies or social connections.
  • Practice self-care to maintain balance.
  • Be honest about your needs and boundaries.

While protection is vital, overprotection can stifle a child’s growth. Striking a balance is key to nurturing confident, capable, and resilient individuals.
