Overcoming Exam Anxiety in Public Exams

Nithin A. F, Consultant Psychologist, SUT Hospital, Pattom

At the end of the academic year, all the students are occupied in preparing for the public and competitive exams. This is the time when they need to implement all the knowledge that they have acquired during the year. In this blog, we will be talking about some tips that will assist them in preparing well so that they can achieve the best possible results in their exams.

A consistent routine while studying for exams is necessary, but students must not study so intensively that they forget a healthy daily routine. A long-term study schedule is the secret to academic success and happiness.

Stay hydrated: Studying is an intellectually demanding activity, so it exhausts energy. To avoid fatigue, students must drink water at regular intervals.

A good diet can also contribute towards improved concentration and brain function. Attempt to consume leafy vegetables, fresh fruit and other nutritious foods daily – not only during exam times, but throughout the year. Also, ensure you sleep for at least six hours daily as this will enhance your ability to concentrate and think clearly.

You need to revise in the period leading up to the exam. You should revise the subjects that you have already studied but set aside specific times for new topics. This will help you to manage your time effectively.

Practicing previous year’s question papers is preferred. Solving 10 model question papers at least will allow you to complete nearly all areas of the syllabus as well as discover where you require more revision. Mock tests will alleviate you from tension and provide confidence to handle public exams.

The role of parents is highly significant in a student going for exams. Parents must not put pressure on children regarding performance. They should encourage them. Parents must highlight the child’s potential to learn rather than compare it with other children. Parents must emphasize that good grades and marks will not determine the child’s future solely. They are just one benchmark of success. This keeps the students mentally resilient and function smoothly in exams.

Students must attempt to prepare for the public and competitive exams sincerely, with dedication. Following these guidelines, they will be able to complete the academic year confidently and with satisfaction.
