Many people associate plastic surgery only with cosmetic procedures. However, cosmetic surgery is just one part of the broader field of plastic and
reconstructive surgery. Plastic surgeons play a crucial role in treating injuries
caused by accidents, including fingertip injuries, which may appear minor but
can significantly affect everyday functioning.

#### How do fingertip injuries occur?

Fingertip injuries often happen unexpectedly during routine activities. Common causes include handling knives, mixers, grinders and other kitchen tools, working with wood-cutting or chapati-making machines, cleaning a moving bike chain, fingers getting caught in doors, two-wheeler accidents and ring- related injuries. In many of these situations, there is a risk of partial or complete amputation of the fingertip or finger.

#### What should you do when a finger is cut?
Immediate first aid is essential. Clean the wound gently with water, cover it
with a clean cloth and apply pressure to stop bleeding. If a part of the finger is
severely injured or get detached bring it to the hospital as timely treatment may allow reattachment.

Handle the amputated part carefully. Rinse it lightly, wrap it in a clean, damp
cloth and place it in a sealed plastic bag. Then place this bag inside another bag containing ice and water. Make sure the finger does not touch ice directly, as this may damage tissue.

#### Surgical Treatment
Plastic surgeons perform various procedures such as reattaching severed
fingertips, repairing nail-bed injuries, flap surgeries to exposed bone at finger
tips, removing small bone fragments to close wounds, temporarily attaching one finger to another for blood supply or attaching the injured finger to the abdomen or chest for soft-tissue coverage.

#### When should you consult a Plastic Surgeon?
Even small cuts and crush injuries should be evaluated by a plastic surgeon.
Fingertips are vital for writing, typing, gripping and using mobile phones. Early
treatment ensures better recovery and long-term function.

#### Preventing Finger Injuries
Wear protective gloves, follow machine safety guidelines, work without haste,
use door stoppers for children and use proper sports gear. With timely care,
surgery and rehabilitation most fingertip injuries can regain excellent function.
